Description
Even though Skeleton plant is not as easy to establish from seeds as some, it is well-worth the effort! After it's established, it's a snap! Water sparingly, and skeleton plant will bloom for you all summer. The clump will increase a bit in size each year, as it spreads by shoots from it's extensive root system. Large clumps can be divided and reset in the fall. This is one wildflower that adapts very well to a wildflower border, as it is not invasive. At first glance, it looks like a strange grass. As it grows, it appears to be all stem, hence it's name. When it begins to bloom, you will be enchanted by the lovely, large lavender blossoms! The bumblebees are enchanted too. It's always interesting to watch them rooting around gathering the pollen. Skeleton plant is native to the western two-thirds of Texas, especially in prairie settings. It likes calcareous, well-drained soils, but will adjust happily to most any garden setting. Tiny leaf structure of Skeleton Plant on bare stem (above)
