Description
The pinkish-purple flowers of the Texas Redbud bloom in clusters early and spectacularly in the spring, appearing even before the leaves emerge. Most commonly found on thin, calcareous, well-drained soils of the Blackland and Grand Prairies and West Cross Timbers, Edwards Plateau, and Rolling Plains. Texas Redbud is usually west of the native habitat of its more eastern relative, Eastern Redbud Cercis canadensis . The mature leaves are smaller, rounder, heavier and glossier than other redbuds, a reflection of the drier climate where it occurs. The seedpods turn a beautiful rosy hue in late spring. All redbuds are winter hardy, even in the Panhandle.
