Description
This smooth glossy green grass with its characteristic purple seed heads is found poor soils in the eastern regions of the country. It does best in acidic soil that is poor in nutrients and is well drained. Typically growing from 2 to 5 feet tall, this is an important grass for erosion control and revegetation in disturbed areas. Its native range stretches from Texas to Nebraska and all the way to the eastern seaboard. Purpletop forms a highly sought after forage grass and is once established forms dense coverage which helps keep weeds and brush at bay.It's hard to fully appreciate the colorful purple seedheads of this grass from a photograph, however (above) is the best pic we've taken so far...
